body butter container

Most effective way to kill a mouse?
We found a few weeks ago that we have a mouse in our house. We have put out peanut butter with canary seed poison, which we were told works the best as it will dehydrate his body once he dies so we don't have this nasty stench in our house & wonder where it's coming from. It's quite obvious he's been into it but it's been almost 2 weeks and we still see him strutting around looking healthy and getting into our food! Our landlord gave us this blue block of "industrial poison" but he hasn't touched it (unsure if we're supposed to break it apart??).
The method I'm trying today is this:
I've filled up the kitchen sink, I've put a piece of bread with peanut butter into a tupperwear container, which is now floating in the water. I'm unsure of the brains of a mouse, so I don't know if this will work.
Any other ideas that will work quickly? I'm tired of finding mouse crap everywhere! He got into a large unopened bag of Nachos yesterday and was I pissed!!!!!
The most effective and practical method for trapping mice is utilizing glue boards or "sticky traps" baited with peanut butter. Snap traps are cumbersome and sometimes easy to trip without catching anything. Even with a desiccant or "dehydrating" bait you can still encounter an odor. Placement is important. In a residence, place glue boards next to the walls behind the refrigerator and stove. Also around the water heater is a prime spot. Mice are attracted to the warm areas. Mice are very easy to catch with proper placement of traps because they are naturally curious of new objects in their environment. Mice are comfortable traveling along the edge of walls as a sort of guide because they don't see well. They use their whiskers and parts of their fur as feelers. More importantly, try and determine the entry point of the dwelling and seal these areas. Common areas are where the pipes enter through the walls such as under the sink or perhaps gas pipes and electrical conduit. Also check under your entry doors. If there is more than a quarter inch gap it needs a door brush or door sweep installed. Mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime.
