what are some fallacies in this?
The so-called "environment-friendly" cosmetic shops are less than honest. They try to pass themselves off as barefoot hippies but they make good profits out of people's squeamishness about hurting the great polka-dot owl or the pixellated canker worm. Hippies are supposed to hate capitalism, aren't they? So why should we trust these people, anyway? They can also play havoc with local economies. Several years ago Body Shoppe cajoled groups of African women to set up companies to manufacture this product. But so many people were producing it that the market for shea butter became saturated. Some of the groups went bankrupt. So much for helping the downtrodden of the earth!!
What are some of them named?
The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry! Some very caring, sincere, well-meaning, wonderfully intelligent idealists get caught up in trying to make the world better for all of us. They often fail. Stuff happens, relax, get over it. I am sure these so-called "environment-friendly" cosmetic shops started out with a great idea like not testing cosmetics on animals. That sounds good to me. Why blind all those rabbits just so women can get a better mascara. So there is definitely something there that we can admire and respect and support. A lot better than some huge corporation cutting down the rain forests! Capitalism has it pluses and minuses. One of its pluses is that it fosters creativity, imagination, entrepreneurship, experimentation, diversity, variety. It responds to demand and supply. As you point out, over production can be a real bummer. I am sure Body Shoppe did not intentionally set out to saturate the shea butter market.
