If my son is allergic to cashew nuts?
What other nut might he be allergic to? He eats peanuts and peanut butter with no problems. The reaction to the cashew was pretty severe and he had to be rushed to the hospital at the age of two from merely taking one bite. I don't want to risk another scare like that, but at the same time, how will I know if I don't try other nuts? He is 7 now, and we haven't let him have cashews since that incident. But I have been told that the next reaction will be more severe and lethal since the body is just waiting for that trigger to react.
Peanuts are legumes and related to soybeans. Cashews are tree nuts. You need to have him tested for tree nut allergies, these include almonds, pecans, walnuts etc. There may also be fruits that are related to cashews that he may be allergic to. My daughter is deathly allergic to almonds, but also peaches, plums, nectarines, cherries and apricots, anything with a hard pit.
It is very important for children with food allergies to be under the care of an allergist, and that they carry an Epi=Pen. Please take him to the doctor.
